Weight Management Clinics
With about 40 - 50% of pets being classed as overweight, obesity in dogs, cats and rabbits in the UK is a growing concern. Obese animals are at a greater risk of the following health problems:
- Increased exercise intolerance
- Increased surgical and anaesthetic risk
- High blood pressure
- Breathing problems
- Heart failure
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Arthritis
There are many contributing factors leading to obesity, such as:
- Overfeeding or not correctly measuring out your pet’s daily food allowance
- Lack of physical activity/stimulation
- Owners using food or treats to reward and show affection
- Incorrect diet for an animal’s lifestyle/needs
Just like people, dogs, cats and rabbits have an ideal weight. Achieving and maintaining your pet’s ideal weight not only reduces the above health risks, but can lead to your pet having a more energetic, longer and healthier life.
There is a low calorie/fat, high fibre diet available to aid weight loss. Animals on this diet must be weighed regularly to ensure that the correct amount of food is being given.
Our practice offers a free nurse clinic to help and advise you on your pet’s weight management program, including nutritional and exercise advice, regular weigh-ins and measurements and advice to help ensure your pet maintains its new healthy weight and avoids regaining it.
If you are unsure about your pet’s diet or waistline, this clinic is for you!
