Euthanasia
Euthanasia is a word derived from the Greek, literally meaning ‘good death’. It is one of the most difficult decisions anyone can ever make for a pet who is beloved friend and companion. After being there and caring for them for the duration of their life, the last act of kindness we can do for them is give them a painless, dignified death.
Euthanasia is used to put to an end or prevent terminal suffering and a negative quality of life. We are here to support and advise you during this difficult period for you and your pet. Your vet will give you their professional, objective advice about what is best for your pet, but as painful and difficult as it is, the final decision must be yours.
The euthanasia process itself is designed to be as quick and peaceful for you and your pet as possible. An appointment will be made during a quieter period at the practice. It is your personal choice whether you wish to be present or not at any part of the procedure.
Grief is a natural response to the loss of your beloved friend. It can affect us all in many different ways. It may help you to talk through what you are experiencing with a member of the veterinary team or with a dedicated pet bereavement support service.

After Care options
Several options are available in the handling of the deceased pet. As with humans, burial and cremation are the two choices.
Some people like to bury their pets in a private site on their own property. We can advise you on the best way to ensure this is done correctly following the latest laws and regulations.
Cremation is the preferred choice amongst pet owners nowadays. There are two types of cremation services available: communal and individual. Communal cremation is where your pet will be cremated with other animals and their ashes are interred in the gardens of the crematorium. You may prefer to have your pet individually cremated. You will receive your pet’s ashes back. There are several options ranging from a scatter tube to a variety of caskets. We can help and advise you on the best option for you depending on your future wishes and plans for the ashes.
