Spaying and Neutering
We strongly recommend that you have your pets spayed or neutered. Your pet will be a healthier animal and many behavioural problems can be avoided; as well as making sure that your pet is not involved in unwanted pregnancies.
Health benefits for your pet:
- Neutering a female animal (spaying) before or soon after she reaches sexual maturity can significantly reduce her risk of developing mammary cancer. Uterine and ovarian cancer are also ruled out completely. The risk of pyometra (infected womb) in bitches is eradicated by spaying and the risk of diabetes is greatly reduced.
- Neutering male animals (castration) prevents common problems in dogs and cats such as testicular cancer and prostate problems. In addition, neutered male cats and dogs are less likely to roam and get into fights which can lead to injury and infection.
Benefits for owners:
- Male animals that have been neutered when they are young are less likely to be aggressive toward other males and are not distracted by females on heat so they are less likely to go walkabout and get into trouble. Neutered males also tend not to mark with urine as much as entire males.
- A spayed female animal will not attract all the males from the neighbourhood around to cause a nuisance.
- Female animals that are spayed do not leave blood stains on the furniture and carpets.
- Most importantly, unwanted pregnancies are avoided.
Spaying or neutering your pet will help avoid the overpopulation of unwanted animals.
