Adolescent checks

When your dog/cat reaches the age of 6 months, you will be asked to bring them in for an adolescent check with the nurse. This check is free of charge and is available so we can check the growth of your pet and its general wellbeing. Topics that are generally covered at the check are:

GENERAL HEALTH

Eyes, ears, nose and skin are checked for any abnormalities eg. discharges, redness, odours etc. Any major concerns noticed sooner should be seen by a vet.

TEETH

Most dogs/cats will have all their adult teeth by 6-7 months of age. If there are any baby teeth still present, these can be removed at the time of neutering. General dental care may be discussed to help prevent problems in the future.

FEEDING

Diet plays a big part in your pet’s development; you will have been advised of a good complete food when your pet was in for its initial vaccination course. This is a good time to check their weight and ensure that they are growing at a steady rate whilst on a good stable diet.

EXERCISE

Every dog needs exercise on a daily basis. It is advisable to gradually build up their exercise regime at steady rate. Too much too young causes joint problems as they develop, especially in the larger breed dogs.

TRAINING

If you have any behavioural/training issues, we will be happy to pass you on to Deanne at our Chilwell branch who is our resident behaviourist.

FLEA AND WORM CONTROL

We will ensure you are fully up to date with your flea and worm control.

NEUTERING

This can be done from 6 months of age onwards depending on the breed of dog. We will discuss the health implications of not neutering and when best to carry it out.

INSURANCE

If your pet is not yet insured, we can give you 4 weeks free insurance with Pet Plan (unless this was already done at their initial vaccination course).

HEALTHY PET CLUB

Now would be a good time to join the Healthy Pet Club, as by the time their booster vaccination is due, it and their next 6 months supply of flea/worm control will already have been paid for at a discount by direct debit.
